Ahhh … the smell of spring is in the air! Time to open your windows and feel the refreshing warm afternoon breeze carrying the scent of fresh spring rain. The daffodils and tulips are popping up out of the thawing earth and it’s a sure sign of the warm months quickly approaching. It’s time to gather around the barbeque grill and enjoy a match of croquet. Time to dust off the tennis racquet and the golf clubs and head outdoors. It’s time to get out and play!
Why not play with your style a little too? It’s spring time! Time to start fresh and anew. Time to spring clean and why not start with your closet? It’s time to feel your best and it all starts with you.
From nudes to pastels, brights to prints, it’s hard to go wrong with the fashion trends this season. It seems as though I have seen a little bit of everything.
The strongest trend seems to be “color blocking.” Easily accomplished by pairing two solid colors. Don’t be afraid to pair purple and red or blue and green together. It’s a bold statement and is easy to pull off. Keep your accessories to a minimum when color blocking. A red skirt or pant with a purple top is enough on its own. Finish with a dainty gold necklace and nude heels.
If bold and bright isn’t you, color blocking looks just as amazing in subtle pastels and nudes. Pair lavender and mint, or taupe and mauve. It’s sleek and chic and spot on for spring of 2012.
A combination of prints can be a fun way to mix up your spring look. Choose prints in complimentary shades and mix and match. It’s best done with one small fine printed piece and one large. You can pair just about anything with a small polka dot print. Just be sure the colors match well.
On a budget? Go out and get several bright colored necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Think orange, yellow, blue, green, and purple. Add pizzazz to a plain neutral colored dress by adorning it with fun bright accessories. Go all one color or mix and match colors. Wear a grey dress with all bright green accessories and then add a pop with some orange wedges or even flip flops!
You can find fun affordable ballet flats in all types of colors, prints and textures. Throw on a cute pair of ballet flats with anything plain. From capris to trousers and dresses, it’s a fun affordable way to add color and personality to any look.
A new season is a girl’s best excuse to purchase a new handbag! The last several seasons have started to sway into a more structured style bag and spring of ‘12 continues that trend. However, there are endless options for color and finish. From brights to neutrals, and snakeskin to crocodile, the choice is yours.
With so many options to freshen up your spring style, I know you’ll feel fabulous and chic when stepping out to that next barbeque party!

What’s New Underfoot for 2012!

Shaw Flooring

The World Floor Covering Association (WFCA)
Photos coutesy of Shaw Floors
As an interior designer for more than 20 years, I like to start building my rooms from the floor up. Once again in 2012, hard surfaces -
hardwood floors, ceramic tiles, laminate, luxury vinyl planks, tiles, cork, bamboo- and the list goes on, are dominating the residential flooring options according to the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA). Flooring is the most used surface, second only to walls or ceiling in size. There are a plethora of floor coverings available in the marketplace with carpet trends continuing to move toward softer, textured and more luxurious looks. The new trend in bold design and color in area rugs not only add warmth and comfort to a room, but are creating dynamic focal points.
The success of any design lies in the planning, details and professional installation. Have you ever had a situation where you spent good money on something and it did not perform as expected or was installed wrong? Me too! How do you decide what is best for you? Here are some questions I use to help clients navigate through the choices.
Questions to ask
What style or feel do you want? Would you prefer an eye-catching design or a more neutral quiet backdrop? How much wear and tear will the floor get? Dump trucks or house slippers?
Develop your budget including the cost of the product, floor preparation, furniture removal, replacement and professional installation
Does it need to have special qualities, such as being waterproof or pet proof? See Spot go!
Now grab your pad and pencil, a picture of the room(s) a quick sketch with dimensions and lets go shopping!
Pre-finished vs. On-site Finish
Pre-finished hardwoods are treated with state-of-the-art factory finish. Clear urethane finishes are sprinkled with aluminum oxide—microscopic metal crystals—to increase durability. Several coats are sprayed on and dried under ultraviolet lighting. The finish is about 10 times harder than is possible with a site-finished floor. With prefinished, you’ll also avoid the odorous off-gassing, labor and the time required for finishing a floor in place. The moment after prefinished flooring is installed, it can be walked on. Instant gratification.
Not sure yet; let’s keep digging!
Engineered Wood
Most engineered flooring comes pre-finished and goes down with relative ease. Engineered floors are constructed of three or more thin sheets or “plies” of wood cross laminated together to form a single stable plank. Each plank is made like a sandwich, with stable, low-cost woods providing the foundation and the prettiest, more costly showpiece woods as the top surface. Most engineered flooring comes pre-finished and goes down with relative ease. Engineered wood flooring can be used virtually anywhere, even over concrete or below grade.
Sounds great for the lower level Guest Room!
Laminate floor can be installed on, above or below grade, making it a great choice for bedrooms, basement rooms, attic rooms or playrooms. Laminates selling features: creative design , but add to that durability, ease of installation and maintenance, and the unbeatable combination of value, aesthetics and performance. I recently used the hand hewn look in an installation with an incredibly authentic looking result.
The “Wood Look” porcelain tile provides style and durability with tile. Porcelain and ceramic tiles that mimic plank wood, parquet, and other looks are available. This is a fabulous choice for a front entry, kitchen, mud room, rich, woody tiles create a luxurious feeling while handling messes that you track in, water, mud, snow or in our house a wide variety of fishing hunting and manly messes! Porcelain or vinyl may be the perfect choice for Spot!
With the sophisticated technologies of today, the realistic patterns in Ceramic-Look Vinyl to beautiful stone and wood looks are strikingly real. There is great variety in finish colors, and seamless sheet goods put up a strong defense against moisture. Kitchens and bathrooms are safe with this flooring. Fiberglass-backed vinyl may even allow you to become the expert in putting the floor down as a weekend project.
Going Green
Concern for forests and the environment are making an impact on how wood flooring is produced. Governments, environmental groups and industry leaders are adopting certification programs and tracking systems to validate the sustainability of wood supplies.
Cork
You want different? You get different with cork. Not new but not like any of the other wood products either. It comes in wonderful textured looks and colors.
It is important to understand that though cork flooring originates from cork trees, it comes from the bark of the tree rather than the actual wood. This is a great advantage as the tree does not have to be uprooted for obtaining cork. A single tree can last for as long as 200 years and the bark from this same tree can be used again and again for purposes of cork flooring. The best part about cork flooring is that it is elastic in nature which makes walking on it a pleasure. Its waterproof qualities also work well in blocking sound; want some peace and quiet, then this cork flooring is the one for you.
Bamboo
Bamboo grows as strands because it is a grass, not a wood. This also allows frequent harvest. While it takes decades to grow hardwood trees that can only be harvested once, bamboo can be harvested every three years without need for replanting. The roots are still in the ground, so the plant just grows again.
I have not had a lot of call for bamboo here in the Northland. I called one of our major suppliers and was told they had dropped it (translation it isn‘t selling well enough for them to invest in sampling it).
The design effect is similar to Scandinavian style but with an Asian influence, it is appealing in a contemporary setting. I personally LOVE IT and am looking forward to the opportunity to use it more.
Hopefully these 2012 will get you inspired for your creations-remember the sky is the limit, create a space that is reflective of you and your family and if it works incorporate some of these remembering, your flooring can last for years.

Disney COMES TO HAWAII
Story By: Liane Lance
Cruise Holidays of Kansas City
When you think of a lush, tropical paradise surrounded by pristine, blue waters, it is usually Hawaii that comes first to mind. And why not? You don’t need a passport to visit, and yet it feels like traveling to an entirely different country. In fact, it is our only state not geographically located in North America. It is also the only state to not have a single straight line in its state boundary.
Hawaii also proudly embraces a different native language, different native dress, and a decidedly different outlook on life in general. True, this island paradise is also cosmopolitan and “American” in many ways, but it has not lost its’ core culture. It is a culture of hospitality and you will certainly feel welcome as you de-plane and have a lei placed around your neck! The language can seem fairly intimidating at first, but once you learn that the entire Hawaiian alphabet is made up of the 5 vowels (a,e, i, o, u) and just 7 consonants (h,k,l.m,n,p,w), it gets easier to break down those long words! Also, their vowels are always pronounced the same unless you see a kahako symbol (^) above it, indicating it is an unstressed vowel. Whenever you see a backwards apostrophe-like symbol called an okina, you simply insert a quick pause in the word. For example, most people pronounce the capital of Hawaii as “oh-wha-hoo,” which is incorrect. The correct pronunciation is “oh-ah-hoo.”
Hawaii is a fascinating and amazingly diverse location to visit – you can find white sand, black sand, volcanoes, wet areas, dry areas, stunning waterfalls and spectacular surf. There is a cornucopia of activities to do – or you can do nothing at all. Hawaii is the most recent addition to our flag (1959), and is the only state made up entirely of islands. This is an important factor when planning a visit. People ask me “when is the best time to visit Hawaii?”, and my answer is first another question, “where in Hawaii do you want to visit?” The official rainy season is the winter season, from November to March – but that can mean absolutely nothing based upon where you are in Hawaii. It’s going to rain somewhere, on every island, each day and it may only be a sprinkle versus a downpour. Their weather is a micro system within each island, based on the prevalent tradewinds that blow from east to west. Leeward sides of all the islands (western and southern sides), are typically warmer and more dry. The windward (northern and eastern sides) are usually cooler and wetter.
WHAT’S NEW IN HAWAII? The DISNEY Aulani Resort!
So, you already know that Hawaii is a great destination, but you might not be aware that DISNEY has also come to Hawaii with a terrific new resort offering – The Aulani (which means “king’s messenger” in Hawaiian). This new beachfront resort is located on the capital island of O’ahu, in Ko Olina on the leeward side of the island. It’s Kapolei address is a more tranquil and less congested area than Waikiki, but still close enough to enjoy the popular sites on O’ahu.
Disney has pulled out all the stops to create a unique and magnificent resort that couples and families will both enjoy. Walt Disney Imagineers worked hand-in-hand with locals to create a place that celebrates Hawaiian culture, history and traditions. The Aulani was designed with the intention to immerse guests in the legends of the islands – to give them an experience that would bring out the enchantment of Hawaii.
The resort boasts a variety of accommodations to choose from – standard rooms and suites to villas (ranging from studios to 2 bedrooms, and even a Grand Villa that can accommodate 12 guests!) To make your stay more “all inclusive,” Disney offers a variety of meal plans that can be added to your booking to make your dining experience more predictable for your budget.
In addition to a spectacular beach, the resort boasts a myriad of pools, each designed for different purposes. There is a tubing “stream” which twists through caverns while its lazy river glides along the Hawaiian landscape. There is a huge 8200-square-foot, zero-entry pool that also includes a spectacular plunge down the “Volcanic Vertical,” the tunnel body slide. There is a snorkeling lagoon, Rainbow Reef, which offers an up-close look at life underwater. There is a marine conservation pool with stingrays and marine biologists on hand to teach young and old all about the wonders of our oceans and the wildlife that lives there. There are adult pools and whirlpool spas, special play areas for the kiddos,
and poolside cabanas that can be reserved to create a more private, waterside experience. »»
Disney designs their resorts to be highly accessible to those with disabilities – and they have water and sand wheelchairs available in addition to handicapped rooms and ramps.
Want more fun?
Adventures by Disney Excursions offers a variety of excursions off-property as well, such as golf, surfing, horseback riding, sailing, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba, and much more! There’s even “shopping excursions” for those who want to pick up local treasures to take back home!
Hawaii is an amazing destination, no matter how you plan it. The addition of Disney only makes it more amazing. I hope you consider visiting the islands soon! Mahalo!

Rediscovering America’s Rivers
As a travel agent, I am frequently asked about river cruising in Europe – and it is a wonderful experience. But for those who can’t afford the high price tag for airfare across the pond, we do have a fantastic alternative right here in the Midwest! Want to cruise down the Mississippi, Ohio, Cumberland or Tennessee rivers, stopping in historic river cities along the way? If yes, then you need to know about the launch this April of the American Queen, a magnificent and decadent way to experience the history, heritage and culture of America’s heartland.
Steamboating isn’t a new mode of transport – it’s one of the original modes of travel in our country, bringing goods and passengers into new lands via our conveyable river systems. And to enjoy it, you may not even need to buy an airline ticket to your point of embarkation, as many of the itineraries feature starting points that are easily drivable from Kansas City.
The Great American Steamboat Company is launching the only authentic, overnight paddlewheel steamboat in America – the American Queen – with varied itineraries from April through December 2012. There are voyages from as short as 3, 4, and 5 nights, to longer itineraries of 6, 7, 8, and 10 nights. You can start as far north as St. Paul, Minn. and enjoy the Fall colors as you make stops in Hannibal Dubuque, La Crosse, Red Wing, and more. Many of the cruises offered have themes, as in the cruise between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, where the music of the 1960s keeps that Motown sound and R&B vibe rocking you down the river. Are you a Civil War enthusiast? Then choose a voyage between Vicksburg and Chattanooga, with stops in Helena, Memphis, Savannah and Decatur along the way. There are several itineraries designed specifically around the Civil War theme, complete with actors, impersonators, lecturers, balladeers, and field trips. Visit the battlefields and learn more about this tumultuous time in our country’s history. Some of the itineraries will include overnight stays that will coincide with Civil War reenactments which really bring this time period to life. Other itineraries are designed around the Kentucky Derby, Christmas on the river, Big Band music, southern culture, and much more.
Onboard, you will dine on the acclaimed cuisine of famed American Chef Regina Charboneau. There is nightly entertainment in the ship’s theater designed after the famed Ford’s Theatre where Lincoln was shot. Enjoy dancing to traditional Dixieland jazz, swing, or Big Band music. Then retire to your lushly appointed stateroom where your comfortable bed is made up with the finest linens and luxurious amenities. And while the ship is decorated with the ambiance of a warm and inviting antebellum mansion, the attire onboard is always elegant casual – no formal wear is required.
And talk about all-inclusive! Your voyage will include your accommodations, your onboard entertainment, multiple specialty dining options (all included), complimentary bottled water and soft drinks throughout your voyage, complimentary wines and beers at dinner, AND your shore excursions. It’s a great value and a relaxing, entertaining way to experience our country – there’s always something interesting to look at as you sit on the ship’s verandah, sipping a lemonade and watching the world go by!
